Thanks to Trackaphone you can follow the progress of many of our Round Britain Challenge boats and the Relay Tokens online.
Click on the link below to view the Trackaphone map and follow the boats.
Markers for each of the tracked boats and for the Tokens will appear as each tracking device goes live.
An OGA member has produced an alternative map which shows both the Trackaphone boats and also (thanks to Marine Traffic) RBC boats that are using the AIS system, and some boats added manually from other info.
On either map, the position of each boat or token is indicated by a marker. Hover over a marker on the map and the name of the boat or token will appear. Occasionally when boats are close together one marker will obscure another. Zoom in closer to separate.
Be aware that the marker will only show the correct position if the tracked phone is switched on and connected to and within range of the UK mobile phone network (Trackaphone), or is actively using the AIS sytem (Marine Traffic). At other times the marker may show an old position, or not appear.
About Trackaphone
TrackaPhone can run its technology on any mobile phone/device and the quality of the service depends on the device. The best results are on a Blackberry and the worst on old mobile phones. The quality of the location brought back to the platform, which is observed on pc’s, laptops etc, will vary depending on the quality of the device. So a smart phone like a Blackberry will give you an excellent GPS location, within metres, often even from inside a building, however, if it is in a steel building GPS will not be received. A very basic phone, without, GPS will only give a location which TrackaPhone obtains from the mobile network which can vary from 100m to 25km. This type of location technology is dependent on where and how many network towers are available. iPhones are not a good device as the Apple do not allow 3rd party applications to run in the background, however, a GPS location can be obtained if the user pushes a red alert. All of the devices are connected via the normal mobile network providers. So we can only locate phones where there is coverage and when yachts are out at sea if they are too far off shore they will not be located.
