Shanty Competition


A small group of Solent Gaffer’ Shantiers wish to challenge fellow amateur shanty singers from across the nation to write an ‘unoffocial’ OGA50 sea shanty to celebrate this special year.

Unofficial competition, Songs judged by our panel and in the manner as below

NB: Previous experience in singing shanties will not necessarily be an advantage.
We must emphasize the fun element. All songs to be sung at the Jubilee Festival in Cowes on August 15th, OR for those attending other OGA events a recording
(preferably a video) to be sent to
Open to all comers!
Points will be awarded for how fitting, catchy and spirited the shanty sounds given OGA’s 50th Year. New words to old tunes or new tunes. Extra points for how much the performers get their audience to sing along and how raucous the applause!.
Maximum five verses. Option to add two more (polite ones) on the night!
